Educational Support

Educational and recreational spaces are critical places where communities grow together. Mayor Pete is committed to expanding academic programs and educational opportunities for Hammond's citizens. Some of the initiatives he has invested in include:

  • $4.4 million spent to rebuild every Hammond park, mostly with grant funding. Community-built playgrounds in North Oak and Cate Square. Zemurray urban fishing program and first-ever fishing rodeo. New restrooms, pavilions, exercise equipment and walking trails. Another $1.2 million committed to major renovations in Mooney and Clarke parks.
  • Completed Zemurray Pool, where high school swim teams practice and compete, firefighters practice rescue training, kids learn how to swim and seniors exercise.
  • Built the Afterschool Program, serving over a 100 kids annually, where certified teachers help kids finish homework and provide hands-on learning in science, math, robotics, reading, music and art.
  • Partnered with Judge Britain Sledge to continue school backpack giveaway. Over 1,200 backpacks of supplies have been given each year with 100% donated funds.
  • Expanded low-cost and free summer and holiday camp programs at the Kenney Recreation Center and the Police Department’s Camp Blue.
  • Expanded seniors activity programs to include monthly veterans breakfasts, museum field trips, line dancing, exercise classes and pickleball.
  • Sponsored kids in STEM camp at the Tangipahoa African American Heritage Museum.
  • Distributed free, one-word/one-picture books for early childhood literacy.

Success in Economic Development

Mayor Panepinto believes in working together to accentuate the outstanding parts of our community so that businesses, employers, and workers will be inspired to join us in helping our city continue to grow, prosper, and shine. As part of that commitment, the mayor:

  • Assisted in recruiting national supply and distribution businesses such as Medline, Wayfair and Carvana. Redevelopment of Hammond Square with Home Depot, Firestone, PetSmart, Old Navy, Michaels, and HomeGoods.
  • Invested in downtown small business district improvements, including planting trees, repairing sidewalks, constructing the Hammond Railroad Park, expanding parking, and enhancing holiday lighting. Won the Great American Main Street award in 2022.
  • Orchestrated the return of the Hammond Northshore Regional Airshow, drawing 50,000 people to dine, shop and stay in our city.
  • Attracted numerous major motion picture and television projects, injecting more than $500,000 into the local economy.
  • Won Louisiana’s Cleanest City contest for 13 years in a row and achieved the highest recorded score statewide.

Building a strong Hammond requires investments in infrastructure. Mayor Pete draws from his
construction background to make sure things are built the right way and plans become reality.

  • Invested over $14 million in the last 8 years to sewer rehabilitation and improvements.
  • Dedicated all of our federal recovery dollars to sewer improvements, and has allocated another $6 million to sewer projects.
  • Led the city through expansions of the sewer treatment plant to meet new standards and accommodate growth.
  • Eight years of completing over $1 million annually in drainage improvements throughout the city. Bought a powerful vacuum truck for cleaning drainage lines and catch basins.
  • Led emergency response and recovery following Hurricane Ida and the 2016 floods.
  • Secured federal and state funding to rebuild the airport’s main intersection, finish the control tower, expand hangars and buy an airport-rescue fire truck.
  • Working to extend University Avenue to Pride Drive for a new business corridor. Widening US 51 between Hammond and Ponchatoula to ease traffic congestion and improve safety.
  • Bringing new LED lighting to major corridors, including I-12 roundabouts and Highway 190.
